Sunny Beach is one of Bulgaria’s most famous seaside resorts. Every year, thousands upon thousands of people flock there for their summer holiday. However, it has a dark side and may not be the best choice for many travellers. It’s overcrowded, noisy, and expensive—far from the idyllic beach escape many people imagine. If you suspect you’re one of those travellers who wouldn’t enjoy Sunny Beach, keep reading. The Noise If you’re looking for a peaceful summer getaway, Sunny Beach is not the place. The noise levels are off the charts, especially in the evening. Nightclubs, beach bars, and drunk tourists ensure that there’s little regard for nighttime quiet. Since most people are under the influence, reasoning with them isn’t an option either. If you value a good night’s sleep, this isn’t your destination. 2. Overdevelopment & Commercialization Sunny Beach is the opposite of a quaint seaside retreat. Due to lax regulations and overdevelopment, it has become a concrete jungle filled with high-rise hotels. In many places, you can’t even tell that the Black Sea is just a stone’s throw away. Like any over-commercialized tourist hotspot, it’s full of tourist traps—overpriced restaurants with subpar food, bars serving cheap and diluted alcohol, and shops eager to rip off unsuspecting visitors. There’s also a complete lack of cultural and historical attractions, and many hotel-booked excursions are little more than gimmicky tourist experiences. If you’re the type of traveller who values authenticity and culture, Sunny Beach is best avoided. 3. The Crowds Sunny Beach gets absolutely packed in peak season (July and August). The beaches are so crowded that finding a quiet spot to relax is nearly impossible. The sea itself can also get dirty and polluted due to the sheer number of people in it. If you’re someone who finds large crowds overwhelming or simply wants a more tranquil beach experience, Sunny Beach won’t be a good fit. Is Sunny Beach good for families? Sunny Beach would be at the bottom of my list of family-friendly destinations. During peak season, it’s packed with partygoers, many of whom are heavily intoxicated and not exactly discreet about their behaviour. Public drunkenness is common, and let’s just say you might see things you’d rather your kids didn’t. The resort also lacks green spaces, and apart from two water parks or lounging by the hotel pool, there’s not much for kids to do. Instead, I’d recommend Albena on the north coast, which is beloved by families. It’s a green, peaceful resort designed with kids in mind. If you prefer the south, Primorsko is a great choice. It’s a small town with all-inclusive hotels, family-run guesthouses, and plenty of activities for children. Honestly, the only reason to visit it is if you’re looking for a binge-drinking, party-fuelled holiday. If your idea of a great summer break involves cheap alcohol, wild nightlife, and zero sleep, then that is the right place for you. Otherwise, you’re better off elsewhere. Is Sunny Beach Good for a Bachelor/Bachelorette Party? It depends on what kind of experience you want. If the groom or bride loves partying and clubbing until sunrise, it will get the job done. However, I’d recommend starting the celebration elsewhere—perhaps in Burgas or Nesebar—before heading to Sunny Beach for the final stretch of the night. That said, I attended a bachelor party there once, and let’s just say it wasn’t my cup of tea. If you want a unique or balanced celebration, I’d look for other options. Now that we’ve covered why Sunny Beach should be avoided, let’s explore some alternatives. For a Larger Resort Experience If you’re looking for a big resort with luxurious hotels and all-inclusive options, consider: Albena – Best for families, with plenty of activities and a green, well-planned layout. Golden Sands – Similar to Sunny Beach but less crowded and overwhelming. It still has a nightlife, but isn’t as extreme. Both of these resorts are in the north and easily accessible from Varna Airport. Primorsko beach For a Southern Resort Alternative If you prefer Bulgaria’s southern Black Sea coast, options are a bit more limited, but there are still better choices than Sunny Beach: Pomorie – A small town just 10 km from Burgas Airport with a dedicated resort area featuring high-end hotels. Nesebar or Ravda – These towns border Sunny Beach but offer a quieter, more scenic setting. Nesebar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is perfect for history lovers, while Ravda is a smaller, village-like destination. Prices in these areas are comparable, but the overall experience is much better. For a More Peaceful & Natural Getaway If I’ve convinced you to ditch big resorts entirely, consider heading south of Burgas. Some fantastic options include: Duni (The Dunes) – A secluded resort with pristine beaches. Arkutino – A beautiful, nature-rich location ideal for a quiet retreat. Duni beach Final Thoughts Sunny Beach may be Bulgaria’s most famous resort, but that doesn’t mean it’s the best choice for everyone.
